Stephen Hay

Stephen Hay started his professional life as a Cadet Midshipman in the Royal Australian Navy and went on to specialise in hydrographic surveying. He now helps service organisations, both for- and not-for- profit, consistently and continually exceed stakeholder expectations. In the interim, he has completed teacher training, worked with the Red Cross and travelled widely. In short, he has packed as much as possible into the time available and continues to do so with his consulting work…

Independently and through his boutique consulting firm, People and Process Limited, he has worked with and attracted clients such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, Telecom Fiji, the New Zealand Ministry of Health, the Queensland Departments of Health and Housing, Learning Lab Denmark, the Queensland Investment Corporation, Fosters Corporation, the University of New South Wales, Housing New Zealand Corporation and the New Zealand Institute of Environmental Science and Research.

Each client represents a case of people grappling with today’s challenge of having to do more with less in an atmosphere of increasingly sophisticated and demanding stakeholders.

Seeking always to improve his client’s condition, selected highlights of Stephen’s value creation include:

  • safe organisational change
  • dramatically improved process performance
  • a much improved project selection and design process
  • substantially reduced waste in strategic business processes
  • a clearer understanding of stakeholder needs and expectations

He has helped service representatives take complete ownership of their customers’ problems through a radical new perspective on service delivery, added unprecedented value at executive level meetings through the innovative use of common tools and helped senior managers understand the workings of their organisation to sufficient detail that they were able to implement changes with predictable results.

He has assisted highly-specialised service organisations reconcile the competing demands of…

  • the individual pursuit of professional knowledge and expertise
  • efficient and effective operational management
  • ease of access to secure information

Stephen’s approach lies in the reconciliation of the needs of the organisation (People) with the expectation of clients (Process) by drawing on a selection of methods and skills including: capacity building, change brokering, innovation enablement, leadership and negotiation, organisational (re)design, process analysis (including statistical process control), project and relationship management, strategy formulation and strategy implementation.

Stephen’s career has allowed him to live and work in eight different countries and visit a further twenty-five. He holds an MBA in Strategy and Innovation from the Theseus Institute (now EDHEC) in France and a Certificate in Company Direction from the NZ Institute of Directors, of which he is a member. He is also an Associate Member of the New Zealand Institute of Management.
